Exhaust tips explained

Back to blog guides

Exhaust tips change how the back of your car looks, but the wrong inlet size will not clamp on, rattle, or sit crooked in the bumper cutout. Most tips in our range are universal clamp-on styles - the skill is measuring your tailpipe and choosing inlet, outlet, and length before you order.

What you need: digital calipers or string + ruler, cold car (not just driven), and 5 minutes to measure the bare tailpipe.

Inlet vs outlet - what to measure

The inlet is the end that slides over your existing tailpipe. It must match the outside diameter (OD) of that pipe - not the visible tip you are replacing. The outlet is what you see at the back of the car; it can be larger than the inlet for a more aggressive look without changing exhaust flow inside the pipe.

Listing titles often show both sizes (for example 3" inlet / 4" outlet). If only one size is quoted, check whether it means inlet or outlet in the description before buying.

How to measure your tailpipe

  1. Remove the old tip if one is fitted, or measure the bare tailpipe behind it.
  2. Measure the outside diameter with digital calipers, or wrap a string around the pipe, measure the length, and divide by 3.14.
  3. Round to the nearest common inch size: 2", 2.5", 3", 3.5", 4".
  4. Measure the bumper cutout height and width if the outlet must pass through an opening.

Do not rely on car model charts alone - aftermarket exhausts, previous repairs, and regional variants change pipe diameter. Measure what is on your car.

Clamp-on vs weld-on

Most universal tips in our range are clamp-on: a band or U-bolt tightens the tip onto the tailpipe. They are reversible and DIY-friendly if the inlet matches. Weld-on tips need a muffler shop to join them permanently - better for track use or when you want zero movement.

If your pipe is slightly smaller than the tip inlet, an adapter sleeve or step-down reducer may be needed. If the pipe is larger than the inlet, the tip will not fit without modifying the pipe (not recommended).

Single, dual, and quad outlets

Single tips suit one tailpipe. Dual sets are sold in pairs for left and right exits - check spacing between pipes on dual-exit bumpers before ordering. Quad or twin tips on one pipe are cosmetic only; they do not split exhaust flow.

Stainless, carbon, and finishes

304 stainless resists rust in UK road-salt conditions. Carbon-fibre and gloss-black tips are popular on BMW and sport builds; keep heat clearance from the bumper (allow at least 20–30 mm). Sand-blasted or brushed finishes hide soot better than mirror polish on daily drivers.

Bumper cutout and proportions

A tip that fills roughly 70–90% of the bumper opening usually looks OEM+. An outlet that is too large may scrape on driveways or sit outside the cutout. Length matters too - long tips can hit the ground on lowered cars.

Important: clamp-on tips are a straightforward DIY job with calipers and a socket set. Welded or rolled tips, rusted tailpipes, or exhaust modifications should be handled by an exhaust specialist so the joint is gas-tight and MOT-safe.

UK MOT and road use

A decorative tip that is securely fitted and does not leak exhaust gas at the joint is generally acceptable for MOT, provided the rest of the system is sound. Tip diameter itself is not usually tested. Removing or bypassing a catalytic converter or DPF to fit a tip will fail MOT - that is an exhaust system modification, not a tip change.

Ordering from Automotive Outlet

  1. Measure tailpipe OD and note whether you need one tip or a pair.
  2. Match inlet size to your measurement; choose outlet size for appearance.
  3. Check listing photos for clamp type and overall length.

FAQ

Will a bigger tip make my car louder?
Usually only slightly, if at all. Most of the sound comes from the muffler and catalyst, not the visible tip.
My pipe is oval - can I use a round tip?
Only with an oval-to-round adapter or a tip designed for oval pipe. Measure height and width separately.
Do Akrapovic-style tips fit any car?
They fit any tailpipe with the correct inlet diameter - the brand name describes the style, not one car model.
How much overlap should a clamp-on tip have?
Aim for enough overlap that the clamp grips the straight tailpipe, usually around 20-30 mm. If the pipe is very short, angled, or rusty, use a garage rather than relying on a weak clamp.
Can an exhaust tip melt my bumper?
Yes if it sits too close to plastic trim. Leave visible clearance around the bumper cutout and check again after the first drive when the exhaust is hot.
