Body trim fitment: spoilers, splitters and diffusers

Spoilers, front splitters, side skirts, and rear diffusers are listed by chassis code and trim level for a reason — an F30 M Sport splitter will not fit a base bumper, and G-series aero differs from F-series even when the model name looks similar. This guide explains how to check compatibility before you order from our large-trims range.

Spoiler, splitter, skirt, diffuser

  • Rear spoiler / boot lip — Sits on the boot lid or trunk edge; usually tape or screws. Does not change the bumper itself.
  • Front splitter / lip — Attaches to the lower front bumper; lowest point of the car — check driveway clearance.
  • Side skirts — Run along the sill between wheel arches; must align with front and rear aero if you want one continuous line.
  • Rear diffuser — Replaces or overlays the lower rear bumper; exhaust cutouts and tow hook access vary by listing.

Chassis codes in our listings

Listings reference BMW and Mercedes platform codes. Examples you will see in our range:

  • BMW 3 Series: F30/F31 (sedan/touring), G20/G21 (current gen)
  • BMW 4 Series: F32/F33/F36
  • BMW 5 Series: G30/G31
  • BMW X5: G05
  • Mercedes CLA: C118

Facelift (LCI) cars can use different bumper mouldings mid-generation. Note your registration year and whether the car is pre- or post-facelift when comparing photos.

M Sport vs standard bumpers

This is the most common fitment mistake. M Sport, M-Tech, and AMG Line bumpers have different lower apron shapes, fog light positions, and grille openings than base trim. A splitter marketed for "F30 M Sport" will gap or overhang on a standard SE bumper.

Check your build sticker, V5C spec, or photograph the full front/rear bumper profile before ordering. If a listing does not state M Sport or base, ask us — do not assume from the model name alone.

ABS, gloss black, and carbon look

ABS plastic parts are paintable and tolerate minor flex. Gloss black finished parts are ready to fit but show scratches easily — use panel wipe before bonding. Carbon-look or real carbon pieces are lighter but brittle; ideal for show cars or careful daily use.

Installation expectations

Many items are bolt-on using existing bumper holes; others need 3M tape, drilling, or adhesive (Betalink-style). Rear diffusers often slide into bumper guides; front splitters may need alignment with a helper. Budget 1–3 hours for a first-time DIY fit. Professional body shops can paint ABS parts to match before fitting.

Parking sensors and cameras

Bumpers with PDC sensors, 360 cameras, or kick-to-open tailgates need listings that account for cutouts. Fitting a solid diffuser on a sensored bumper can block detection — choose a compatible listing or plan to transfer sensor holes with a body shop.

What to photograph if unsure

  1. Full front or rear bumper straight-on (show trim level badges if present).
  2. Low-angle shot of the lower apron / diffuser area.
  3. Registration plate and year if messaging us for fitment help.

We use the same photo-matching approach as our anti-theft key service — clear photos beat guesswork from reg alone when trim options vary.

Ordering from Automotive Outlet

  1. Confirm chassis code, year, and M Sport / AMG Line / base trim.
  2. Match listing title to your bumper style.
  3. Message us with photos if any doubt before checkout.

FAQ

Will an M Performance replica fit like OEM?
Quality aftermarket parts can fit well when trim level is correct, but gap and finish vary by brand. OEM is the benchmark; replicas trade cost for perfect panel gaps.
Do I need to remove the bumper?
Rear diffusers and some splitters — yes or partial removal. Boot lips often fit with the boot open only. Read the listing or ask us for your part.
Can I mix brands (front from one listing, rear from another)?
Yes visually, but line continuity along the side skirt may not match. Same kit family usually looks cleaner.
